You see, one of the things that comes up again and again—in our mentoring sessions with creative business owners, in conversations with agencies and studios, and at the 2009 Creative Freelancer Conference—is that there’s plenty of work out there.

Just because many companies aren’t hiring full-time workers doesn’t mean there’s no work. They still need plenty of creative work to stay in business. And that’s creating thousands of opportunities for profitable long-term relationships that will persist long after the recovery comes.

The fact is many small businesses, freelancers, and entrepreneurs are thriving in today’s market. Their success has nothing to do with luck. They’re simply moving now to get the work that’s available—and there’s a lot more of it than most people realize.

Your business can be one of them simply by keeping your pipeline full of qualified prospects year-round. To do that, you need to get your message in front of those prospects on a regular basis.

But if you don’t have a marketing plan, you know what happens. You get busy. You get overwhelmed. You can’t remember who you emailed last week or who asked you to be sure and call next week. You don’t know which social networking sites to use, (or whether to use them at all). Before you know it, you’re smack in the middle of the Feast or Famine Syndrome…and the Famines are a lot more common these days.

That turns into a downward spiral. You have no leads in the pipeline. The phone isn’t ringing. Your email inbox is full but it’s mostly spam. You remember someone you talked to said, “Yes, we’d love to work with you. Call back next month,” but you can’t remember who it was. UGH!
